This specially designed Autumn/Winter mixture is ideal for improving the health of your soil through the colder months. It’s formulated to be sown from late August to early October, with the mixture to be dug in the spring (April/May) before flowering begins. This cover crop is perfect for soil rejuvenation and winter soil stabilization, offering many benefits such as erosion control and nitrogen fixation.
Key Benefits
- Westerwolds Ryegrass: Helps penetrate heavy soils and stabilise lighter soils, dredging up vital minerals washed away during winter rain, thus preventing erosion and soil capping.
- Common Vetch: A nitrogen-fixing plant that improves soil fertility, helping other plants thrive by increasing nitrogen levels. Its robust root system also plays a key role in reducing soil erosion.
- Winter Cover Crop: Provides a winter green manure that helps improve soil structure, boost soil health, and prevent erosion.
- Spring Boost: Digging in the mixture in the spring adds valuable organic matter to the soil, giving your garden a strong start in the new growing season.
Sowing Information
- Sowing period: Late August to mid-October.
- Digging period: February to April (before flowering).
- Preparation: Prepare the soil by digging, weeding, and raking it into a fine seedbed. For best results, use a rotary mower or strimmer to chop the foliage into a fine mulch before incorporating it into the soil.
- Soil incorporation: After a few hours, dig in the mulch to a depth of 15 cm (6 inches) and allow it to rot down for 2-3 weeks before using the land.
